Starlink and site readiness checklist
What to check before a Starlink installation at your business, so the site visit is quick and the connection works for your whole network. Use it alongside our Starlink installation service.
1. Clear view of the sky
- Run the obstruction check in the Starlink app from the exact spot where you plan to mount the dish.
- Look for trees, water tanks, neighbouring buildings and roof structures that could block the view, and allow for trees that will grow.
- Note a second possible location in case the first one is obstructed.
2. Mounting and weather
- Choose a roof, wall or pole mount that is structurally sound and can be reached safely for maintenance.
- Starlink says its equipment is not designed to withstand hurricanes. Decide how the dish will be secured or brought down before a storm, and who is responsible.
- Plan how the mount and cable entry will be sealed against rain.
3. Power
- Identify a dedicated power outlet near where the router will sit.
- Plan backup power, such as a UPS or inverter, so the connection stays up during outages.
- Add surge protection, especially at sites exposed to lightning.
4. Cable route
- Map the route from the dish to the indoor equipment, including where the cable enters the building.
- Protect outdoor cable runs from sun, foot traffic and damage, and keep them tidy for later maintenance.
5. Your network
- Decide whether the Starlink router will run your network, or whether it will feed your own business router or firewall in bypass mode.
- Check Wi-Fi coverage for the whole site and plan access points where the signal is weak.
- Set up a separate guest network so visitors never share your business network.
6. Remote access and failover
- If you need to reach cameras, servers or other devices from outside, plan for it early. By default Starlink does not allow incoming connections, and a public IP address is only offered on certain service plans.
- If you already have another internet provider, consider keeping it and setting up automatic failover between the two.
7. Account and security
- Make sure the Starlink account and service are in your organization’s name, and decide who manages billing and access.
- Change default passwords on every device, keep firmware up to date and limit who has admin access.
