What drives security needs in the British Virgin Islands

The BVI economy stands on financial services and tourism. On the financial side, the government notes that most revenue comes from incorporating BVI business companies, with investment funds as another major product. Every BVI business company must keep a registered agent licensed by the BVI Financial Services Commission (FSC), so registered agents, trust companies, corporate service providers, fund administrators and the law firms around them hold ownership records, identity documents and client correspondence for companies based all over the world.

That data is valuable to criminals, and much of it moves by email and through client portals. A single compromised mailbox at a registered agent can expose records for a large number of client companies. Tourism, led by yacht chartering and villa and resort stays, adds online bookings, card payments and guest records across Tortola, Virgin Gorda and the smaller islands.

Regulators and national cyber efforts

The FSC is the territory's single regulator for financial services business, covering banking, trust and company service providers, insurance, investment business and virtual asset service providers. Under the virtual assets legislation in force since February 2023, VASPs carry data protection and cybersecurity obligations for the personal data they process. The Office of the Information Commissioner oversees the Data Protection Act, 2021.

At the national level, the government's Department of Information Technology worked with UK-funded cyber specialists in 2025 on a national cyber security risk assessment and training programme focused on critical infrastructure. For private firms, the practical message is the same: document your controls, train your people, and test your systems.

Services for British Virgin Islands businesses

Security awareness training and phishing simulations for BVI firms

Registered agents and trust companies receive a steady flow of instructions from intermediaries they rarely meet: requests to incorporate, change directors, release documents or pay fees. Attackers copy exactly those messages. Our security awareness training for British Virgin Islands teams is delivered as live online sessions every quarter, so staff build habits over the year rather than sitting through one annual lecture. Topics include spoofed intermediary emails, invoice and payment fraud, fake document-sharing links, WhatsApp and text message scams, and how to verify an instruction before acting on it.

Alongside the sessions we run phishing simulations: controlled test emails sent to your staff that imitate the requests your business really handles. You see who clicks, who enters a password, and who reports the email, broken down by team. The next quarter's session then concentrates on the weak spots the simulation revealed. Learn more about our security awareness training, or have your staff try the free Spot the Phish quiz.

  • Live quarterly sessions held during BVI business hours
  • Simulations modeled on intermediary, incorporation and payment requests
  • Coverage of messaging app scams as well as email
  • Team-by-team results on clicks, password entries and reports
  • Session records you can keep as evidence of staff training

Vulnerability scanning in the British Virgin Islands

Client portals, document management systems and remote access gateways are the parts of a BVI firm's network that outsiders can reach, and they are where attackers look first. Our vulnerability scanning service checks those systems from the internet side, using the IP addresses and web addresses you give us. For your internal network, your IT contact installs a small scanning device or software agent, and we use it to look for unpatched servers, outdated software, default passwords and risky configurations on the inside.

Nothing is scanned without signed authorization and a written scope listing the systems, dates and times, and the contact people on both sides. Your report sorts every finding by severity and explains in plain language what it means and how to fix it, whether your IT is in-house or outsourced. Once fixes are applied we scan again to confirm. Many firms book scans on a regular schedule so new weaknesses are caught early. See our cybersecurity services for how scanning fits with monitoring and testing.

  • Internet-facing scans of portals, websites, email and VPN gateways
  • Internal scans through a device or agent you install on site
  • Signed authorization and written scope for every engagement
  • Plain-language report that your IT provider can act on
  • Follow-up scan after remediation

Cybersecurity gap analysis and policy writing for the British Virgin Islands

With an Information Commissioner now in post, BVI organizations can expect closer attention to how they protect personal data. The Data Protection Act's Security Principle requires practical steps to protect personal data from loss, misuse, unauthorized access and alteration. A cybersecurity gap analysis shows whether your current controls would stand up, measured against a recognized framework: NIST CSF, ISO 27001 or CIS Controls.

We run the assessment remotely through structured video interviews with your directors, compliance officer and IT provider, plus a review of the policies, network diagrams and records you already have. The result is a clear gap report, a ranked list of actions and a realistic timeline. If your written policies are thin, we draft them for you, covering acceptable use, passwords, incident response and data protection, in language your staff will actually read. Start by requesting a security gap analysis, or pick up our free password policy template.

  • Assessment against NIST CSF, ISO 27001 or CIS Controls
  • Remote interviews with directors, compliance and IT
  • Gap report with ranked actions and a timeline
  • New or updated acceptable use, password, incident response and data protection policies
  • Controls mapped to the Data Protection Act's Security Principle

AI consulting and AI training for BVI organizations

Corporate service providers and law firms produce and check large amounts of routine paperwork: registers, resolutions, due diligence files and client letters. AI can speed up drafting and review, but only if staff know what is safe to share. Our AI consulting for British Virgin Islands organizations begins with an AI readiness assessment that looks at your data, your workflows and the controls you would need before rolling anything out.

Next comes practical AI training for staff and directors, delivered online, on writing good prompts, verifying output and protecting client information. We then write an AI usage policy and governance framework so everyone knows which tools are approved, what data stays out, and who signs off on new uses, with the Data Protection Act's Disclosure and Security Principles in mind. When you are ready, we move to AI implementation, such as assistants that search your own precedents or tools that pre-fill standard documents. Visit our AI services page or check your starting point with the AI readiness quiz.

  • AI readiness assessment of data, workflows and controls
  • Online AI training for staff and directors
  • AI usage policy listing approved tools and protected data
  • Governance for approving new AI uses
  • AI implementation tested on your own documents

Software development company serving the British Virgin Islands

Syxel Core designs and builds custom software for businesses that need more than off-the-shelf tools. For BVI firms that often means a secure client portal where intermediaries submit incorporation requests and upload documents, a workflow system that tracks annual filings and renewal deadlines, or automation that links practice management, accounting and email. For tourism operators it might be a booking and charter management app or a guest-facing mobile app.

Our developers work from Jamaica, one hour behind the BVI, so most of your working day overlaps with ours for calls, demos and user testing. We start with discovery to pin down requirements, then build in short stages with a working demo at each step. Access controls, encryption, audit trails and careful data handling are part of the design from day one, which matters when the system holds client or personal data covered by the Data Protection Act. Maintenance and support continue after launch. Find out more about our software development service.

  • Secure client and intermediary portals
  • Filing, renewal and deadline tracking systems
  • Booking and charter management apps
  • Integrations between practice management, accounting and email
  • Audit trails and access controls built in

The Data Protection Act, 2021 in the British Virgin Islands

The Data Protection Act, 2021 came into force in the British Virgin Islands on 9 July 2021. It applies to public bodies and to private bodies processing personal data in respect of commercial transactions, and it sets out principles covering consent, notice and choice, disclosure, security, retention, data integrity and access. It also creates offences, and company directors can face personal liability in some cases.

The Act established the Office of the Information Commissioner as regulator. Legal commentary after the Act took effect noted that no Commissioner had yet been appointed. In June 2026 the government announced that Melissa K. Brewley had been appointed Information Commissioner, effective 11 May 2026, to monitor and enforce compliance, investigate complaints and run public education. Firms that treated the Act as dormant should review their position now.

Please confirm your specific obligations with BVI legal counsel. Our part is the technical and organizational security work that supports compliance, not legal advice.

How remote delivery works for BVI clients

Syxel Technologies operates from one office in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and serves BVI clients remotely. We have no office or staff in the territory. The BVI uses Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4) and Jamaica uses UTC-5, and neither changes its clocks, so Jamaica is one hour behind the BVI all year. Our 9am to 5pm working day runs from 10am to 6pm BVI time.

Training sessions, interviews and project meetings run over video, scans run remotely or through an installed agent, and documents are exchanged through secure shared folders. If an engagement benefits from someone being there in person, an on-site visit can be arranged. Email [email protected] or use the message form on this page.

Questions from British Virgin Islands businesses

Do you work with British Virgin Islands companies remotely?

Yes. Our team in Spanish Town, Jamaica, delivers all five services to BVI organizations over video calls, online training and remote scanning. We don't have an office in the BVI, and on-site visits are available by arrangement.

Which data protection law applies to us in the BVI?

The Data Protection Act, 2021, which has been in force since 9 July 2021 and is overseen by the Office of the Information Commissioner. An Information Commissioner was appointed in 2026, so enforcement is now possible in practice. Confirm your obligations with BVI counsel; we handle the security controls, policies and training that support compliance.

What is the time difference between the BVI and Jamaica?

The BVI is one hour ahead of Jamaica throughout the year. Both places stay on standard time with no daylight saving, so the gap never changes. Our hours of 9am to 5pm in Jamaica equal 10am to 6pm in Road Town.

How do phishing simulations work for our staff?

We agree the scenarios and timing with your management first, and your IT provider allowlists our sending servers. Staff receive realistic test emails, and anyone who clicks or enters a password sees a short lesson on what gave the email away. You get results by team, which shape the next quarterly training session.

Our IT is managed by an outside provider. Can you still scan our network?

Yes. We work with your provider to agree the scope and to install the scanning device or agent for internal scans. Your signed authorization covers the engagement, and the report is written so your provider can act on each finding.

Can you visit our office in Tortola?

Most of our work is fully remote, so a visit is rarely required. If you want an in-person workshop for directors or hands-on time with your IT team, we can arrange a visit in advance.
